This morning, the sun did not rise above the horizon. In a Polish housing estate, a young boy vanished into a cloud of coal smog. In the shadow of the chimneys and prefabricated blocks of flats, his younger brother continues to grow up, determined not to accept this. Will he manage to track down his brother in this violent environment, or will he, too, eventually disappear into the cloud of smoke? Director, screenwriter and animator Jakub Krzyszpin has created a raw portrait of growing up in a Polish housing estate. The film’s oppressive world is emphasised by expressive hand-drawn animation based on bold black lines. This film from the National Film School of Poland in Łódź has been screened at the prestigious festivals in Annecy and Zagreb.
